Sexual heath clinics (Genito-urinary medicine - GUM)

Sexual health clinics (sometimes known as GU or GUM clinics) are NHS clinics which are specifically for sexual health. The services at the clinic are free of charge and you do not need to go to your local clinic if you are worried someone will see you there. You can also attend a sexual clinic without having to provide personal details such as your real name.

The clinic provides information and advice about HIV and other sexually transmitted infections as well as tests to see if you have any infections. If you have an infection, they will also treat you.

Sexual health clinics also provide advice if you are having problems with your sex life such as having a low sex drive or having problems getting or keeping an erection. You can also pick up some free condoms and information booklets on sexual health.

Your confidentiality is protected by law and your records from the clinic cannot be shown to your GP or an insurance or mortgage company. However, if your GP refers you in writing to the clinic, the clinic may send your GP a letter informing them about any treatment you may have been given which can end up in your medical records.
